Palestine Fair Trade Imports is very pleased to partner with Canaan Fair Trade, to introduce Palestinian Fair Trade products into the Australian market under the Canaan Label.

About Canaan Fair Trade

Canaan Fair Trade is a Jenin-based Palestinian firm committed to practicing ‘Fair Trade’ along its supply chain.  Established in 2004, Canaan markets “Products of Palestine” that are produced by the now more than 1,700 small farmers, organized in informal cooperatives and represented  in the Palestine Fair Trade Association (PFTA www.palestinefairtrade.org). Canaan supplies bulk, as well as finished and packaged goods to Europe, North America, Australia and the Middle East. A significant and growing portion of Canaan's raw materials has been certified according to organic and fair trade standards and all of Canaan’s products are offered with a Palestinian certificate of origin.

Pride and Dignity for our Farmers

Canaan guarantees a minimum fair price to farmers and producers even when market prices are low.  In addition, Canaan pays farmers typically a 10% Fair Trade premium and 10% Organic premium above the market price.  Canaan also requires that farm workers and workers at processing points such as presses and mills are paid fairly and afforded healthy and safe working conditions.

Canaan reinvests parts of its profits back into the local producing communities in the form of material support for farmers’ cooperatives and education on fair trade practices, farming, and quality production procedures.  Specifically, Canaan returns 1% of its purchases to the respective producing co-ops for community projects and 1% of all purchases to the PFTA for its general programs. Canaan help plant trees in Palestine by supporting Trees for Life program that distributes new seedlings to farmers. Canaan supports and facilitates educational workshops and the distribution of educational material on Fair Trade, organic farming, and quality standards.  Canaan organizes community events such as the Palestine Olive Harvest Festival in the fall joining Palestinian farmers and supporters of the Fair Trade movement in Palestine with their international partners from around the world.  Canaan obtains all locally available materials for bottling and packaging from Palestinian communities to help create more job opportunities.

Scope of Operations

Canaan works with 43 olive oil producing cooperatives with 1,700 farmers spread over the districts of Jenin, Nablus, Salfit, and Ramallah. Currently, twenty of these cooperatives, with 375 members in the districts of Jenin and Nablus, produce certified organic oil, approximately 600,000 liters/year. Canaan plans to further increase its organic production capacities in the coming years.

Canaan also works with four women cooperatives of 21 members to produce Sun-dried Couscous and Za’atar and produces an average of 25 MT of couscous and 5 MT of Za’atar per year.  Finally, we work with four women cooperatives of 20 members to produce an average 6 to 8 MT of Sun-dried Tomatoes.
